SSC Selection Post is the Staff Selection Commission's recruitment for a large number of different Group 'B' and Group 'C' posts in central ministries and departments that are not filled through its regular exams. It is run in phases; the current one is Phase-XIV/2026, notified on 13 April 2026.
Each post has its own essential qualification, age band and vacancies, listed in Annexure-III of the notice. You apply separately for each post category you are eligible for, and you sit one computer-based exam for each education level you have applied at: Matriculation, Higher Secondary (10+2), or Graduation and above. There is no interview.
This guide sets out the dates, the age and relaxation rules, the exam pattern and qualifying marks, shortlisting ratios, the regions, the application steps and the documents exactly as the official Phase-XIV notice prints them. The notice itself prints no total vacancy figure, so none is shown here.
SSC Selection Post Phase-XIV vacancies
The notice does not print a total number of vacancies. Post-wise details — department, post, pay level, essential qualification, age band and category-wise tentative vacancies — are in Annexure-III and on the post-details page of ssc.gov.in. Check the exact post you want there.
The notice says the vacancies indicated are tentative and may be altered, cancelled or merged.
Three exam levels and multiple post categories
- There are three separate computer-based exams: one for Matriculation-level posts, one for Higher Secondary (10+2)-level posts and one for Graduation-and-above posts.
- You apply separately for each post category you choose and pay the fee for each. Apply only once for any one post category.
- If you apply for several posts at the same level, you get one admission certificate for that level and must appear only once. Appearing twice at the same level leads to cancellation.
- If you apply at more than one level, you get one admission certificate per level.
- Your three exam-centre preferences are frozen across all your applications once set.
Age bands, relaxation and qualification
Age is counted on 1 January 2026, and each post has its own band, printed against it in Annexure-III. The notice gives the birth-date windows for every band used.
Your essential qualification and any required experience must be held on the closing date, 4 May 2026. Category and reservation status is also judged on 4 May 2026 unless stated otherwise.
You must be a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 to settle permanently, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from one of the countries listed in the notice to settle in India. Non-citizen categories need a Government of India eligibility certificate before an offer of appointment.

Upper age relaxation (para 6.3)
| Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|
| SC / ST | 5 years |
| OBC | 3 years |
| PwBD (Unreserved) | 10 years |
| PwBD (OBC) | 13 years |
| PwBD (SC/ST) | 15 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | 3 years after deducting military service |
| Central Government civilian employees with at least 3 years' regular, continuous service on 4 May 2026 | Up to age 40 (up to 45 for SC/ST); Group 'C' posts only, not Group 'B' |
| Widows, divorced women and women judicially separated, not remarried | Up to age 35 (up to 40 for SC/ST) |
Computer Based Examination pattern and negative marking
Each level's exam is an objective, multiple-choice test of four parts, each with 25 questions of 50 marks: General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skill) and English Language (Basic Knowledge). Added up, that is 100 questions and 200 marks (our sum).
The exam lasts 60 minutes, with a sectional timer of 15 minutes for each part. Candidates eligible for a scribe get 80 minutes, with 20 minutes per part.
0.50 marks are deducted for each wrong answer.
Questions are set in Hindi and English. You choose your medium in the application form.
If the exam is held in several shifts, marks are normalised, and the normalised scores decide merit and cut-offs.
Syllabus by level
The four parts are the same at every level, but the syllabus and standard change with the level. At Graduation level, Parts A, B and D are set at graduation standard and Part C (Quantitative Aptitude) at Class 10 standard.
Main topics by level (para 15.9)
| Level | Topics |
|---|---|
| Matriculation | General Intelligence: mainly non-verbal reasoning, similarities and differences, space visualisation, series, judgement and decision-making. General Awareness: environment, current affairs, India and its neighbours. Quantitative Aptitude: number systems, decimals and fractions, percentages, ratio, averages, interest, profit and loss, mensuration, time and work, tables and graphs. English: basic grammar, vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, usage and writing ability. |
| Higher Secondary (10+2) | General Intelligence: verbal and non-verbal reasoning, analogies, classification, series, coding-decoding and critical thinking. General Awareness: India's history, culture, geography, economy, polity and science. Quantitative Aptitude: arithmetic, school algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry and statistical charts. English: spot the error, fill in the blanks, idioms, one-word substitution, sentence improvement, voice and narration, cloze and comprehension. |
| Graduation and above | General Intelligence: verbal and non-verbal reasoning, statement-conclusion, syllogistic reasoning, indexing, and address/date matching. General Awareness: current events, India and its neighbours, polity and scientific research. Quantitative Aptitude: whole numbers, ratios, algebraic identities, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, heights and distances. English: comprehension and writing ability. |
Qualifying marks, shortlisting and tie-breaks
To be considered for the next stage you need at least 30% in the CBE if you are Unreserved, 25% if OBC or EWS, and 20% for other categories. These are minimum marks, not cut-offs; the Commission may set different standards depending on vacancies and candidates.
For each post category, candidates are shortlisted for document scrutiny in a ratio of 1:30 where there are up to 5 vacancies, and 1:15 where there are more than 5 vacancies, subject to a minimum of 150. For PwBD and Ex-Servicemen reserved vacancies, all candidates who clear the minimum are shortlisted.
Reserved-category candidates selected on their own merit can be placed against unreserved posts. Candidates who qualify only on relaxed standards are counted against reserved vacancies.
- Ties are broken in this order: total normalised marks, then marks in Part A, then Part B, then Part C, then date of birth (older first), then alphabetical order of name.
SSC regions and the states they cover
You choose three exam centres in order of preference, anywhere in the country. The notice lists tentative centres region by region; the Commission may add or drop centres.
