SSC MTS recruits Class 10 pass candidates for Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff posts across central government ministries, departments and offices, and for Havaldar posts in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN).

Both posts are General Central Service Group 'C', non-gazetted, non-ministerial posts in Pay Level-1. Everyone sits one computer-based examination held in two sessions on the same day; Havaldar candidates also take a walking test and physical measurements. Vacancies, cut-offs and merit are worked out state- and UT-wise.

The latest notice is for the 2025 cycle. This guide explains its rules — age groups, relaxation, the session-wise pattern, negative marking, qualifying marks, Havaldar physical standards and the tie-break order — so you can prepare before the 2026 notice arrives.

SSC MTS vacancies

In the 2025 notice, Havaldar in CBIC and CBN had 1,075 tentative vacancies (detailed at Annexure-XVII of the notice), while MTS vacancies were still being collected from departments. Updated and detailed figures are published on the SSC website under Candidate's Corner → Tentative Vacancy.

SSC MTS salary and post classification

MTS and Havaldar are both in Pay Level-1 of the 7th CPC pay matrix and are classified as General Central Service Group 'C', non-gazetted, non-ministerial posts. Allowances are added to basic pay at central government rates; the notice prints no in-hand figure.

Age groups, relaxation and qualification

Age was reckoned on 1 August 2025, and there are two age groups. MTS is mostly 18–25 years (born not before 2 August 2000 and not later than 1 August 2007). Havaldar in CBIC and CBN and a few MTS posts are 18–27 years (born not before 2 August 1998 and not later than 1 August 2007). Because of the two groups, SSC may fix separate cut-offs for each age group.

The only educational requirement is Matriculation (10th) or equivalent from a recognised board, passed on or before the cut-off date (1 August 2025 in the last notice).

Upper age relaxation

CategoryRelaxation
SC / ST5 years
OBC3 years
PwBD (Unreserved / EWS)10 years
PwBD (OBC)13 years
PwBD (SC/ST)15 years
Ex-servicemen3 years after deducting military service from actual age

Further codes (for SC/ST defence personnel, central government employees and widowed/divorced women) are listed in the notice.

Exam pattern, negative marking and qualifying marks

The computer-based exam has two compulsory sessions on the same day, 45 minutes each (60 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe). Session-I has Numerical and Mathematical Ability (20 questions, 60 marks) and Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving (20 questions, 60 marks). Session-II has General Awareness (25 questions, 75 marks) and English Language and Comprehension (25 questions, 75 marks).

There is no negative marking in Session-I. In Session-II each wrong answer costs one mark. The exam is offered in Hindi, English and 13 regional languages for Session-I and the General Awareness section of Session-II.

Session-I is evaluated first, and Session-II is evaluated only if you qualify in Session-I. The minimum qualifying marks in each session are 30% for UR, 25% for OBC and EWS and 20% for all other categories. For MTS, the merit list is prepared solely on normalised Session-II marks, with separate category-wise and state/UT-wise cut-offs. For Havaldar, candidates are shortlisted for the PET/PST in a ratio of 1:7 on the basis of Session-II.

If candidates tie on Session-II aggregate marks, the tie is broken by General Awareness marks in Session-II, then total normalised Session-I marks, then date of birth (older first), then alphabetical order of names.

Havaldar physical efficiency and standard tests

Only Havaldar candidates take these tests, which are conducted by CBIC/CBN at centres they choose anywhere in the country. A woman candidate found to be 12 or more weeks pregnant is declared temporarily unfit and re-examined six weeks after confinement.
