SSC JE is the Staff Selection Commission's examination for Junior Engineer posts in central government departments and organisations. The 2026 notice, dated 2 September 2026, also uses the same examination to recruit Junior Engineer (Telecom) in the Department of Telecommunications and Scientific Assistant in the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Every post is in Group 'B' at Pay Level-6 (₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400).

Selection runs through two computer-based papers. Paper-I tests reasoning, general awareness and your chosen engineering or technical subject and is qualifying only; Paper-II is a 300-mark paper in the same subject, and its normalised marks decide final merit and allocation along with the post preferences you submit online. Documents are verified by the user department after the final result, and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) posts add a physical and medical examination.

This guide sets out what the 2026 notice and SSC's follow-up notices print: the tentative vacancies, the department-wise qualification and age limits, the exam pattern and negative marking, qualifying marks and the tie-break order, the syllabus, BRO's physical standards, the application steps and the documents you will need.

SSC JE 2026 vacancies: department-wise and category-wise

The notice announced 1,748 tentative vacancies. SSC's post-wise and category-wise tentative vacancy list dated 8 October 2026 totals 1,699. The largest shares are Scientific Assistant in IMD (462), JE (Civil) in CPWD (343), JE (Civil) in BRO (271), JE (Electrical & Mechanical) in MES (161) and JE (Civil) in MES (154).

State-wise or zone-wise vacancies are not collected by the Commission; ask the user department if you need them. There is no reservation for ex-servicemen, because all the posts are Group 'B', but ex-servicemen still get age relaxation.

SSC JE salary and post classification

Every post in this examination is Group 'B' in Pay Level-6 of the 7th Pay Commission matrix, which runs from ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400 basic pay. Allowances are paid on top at central government rates; the notice does not print an in-hand figure, so none is shown here.

Selected candidates are on probation for two years and the posts carry All India Service Liability, so you can be posted anywhere in India. The user department may allot you a state, UT or zone and may require you to learn the local language before confirmation.

Age limit, relaxation and qualification in detail

Age is counted on 1 August 2026. Most posts have an upper limit of 30 years (born between 2 August 1996 and 1 August 2008). CPWD and the Directorate General of Lighthouses & Lightships allow up to 32 years (born between 2 August 1994 and 1 August 2008).

The qualification must be held by the closing date, 22 September 2026, and the result must actually be declared by then. Where experience is required, it must be gained after the qualification; internships, training or research done during the course do not count.

Some posts overlap: if you opt for JE (Mechanical) you are also considered for JE (Electrical & Mechanical); JE (Electrical) applicants can also be considered for JE (Telecom) and JE (Electrical & Mechanical); and JE (Telecom) and Scientific Assistant applicants can be considered for each other's posts, subject to holding the required qualification.

Only men can apply for BRO posts. You must be a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from one of the countries listed in the notice; the last three groups need a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India.

Posts suitable for persons with benchmark disabilities

  • All Junior Engineer posts except those in BRO are identified as suitable for certain benchmark disabilities; the notice's table lists the suitable categories post by post.
  • JE (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical) and Scientific Assistant posts are not identified as suitable for visually handicapped candidates; JE (Telecom) in DoT is suitable for low vision.
  • Candidates eligible for a scribe get 20 minutes of compensatory time per hour of the examination, whether or not they use the scribe.
  • If you opted for your own scribe, the scribe must register afresh on ssc.gov.in with Aadhaar authentication; for Paper-I the scribe's OTR had to be mapped by 27 October 2026 (11 pm).

BRO posts: physical efficiency, physical and medical standards

Only BRO posts have physical and medical standards. They are tested by BRO after the final result, not by SSC. The notice warns that if you are allotted a BRO post and fail these standards, your candidature may not be considered for any other post, so read Annexure-XVI before putting BRO in your preferences.

The physical efficiency test is a one-mile run to be completed within 10 minutes at the GREF Centre, Pune; passing it is mandatory before the medical examination.

Visual acuity must be at least 6/12 in each eye, or right eye 6/6 and left eye 6/24; spectacles are allowed during the test, but uncorrected vision must not be worse than 6/60 in each eye.

Sons of serving or ex-GREF personnel get a relaxation of 2 cm height, 1 cm chest and 2 kg weight. Schedule-III lists grounds for rejection, including BMI under 18, knock knee, flat feet, colour blindness, any squint and blood pressure above 140/95.

Qualifying marks, normalisation and tie-break

Both papers are objective multiple-choice tests in Hindi and English. Paper-I has negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer and Paper-II of 1 mark per wrong answer. IS 456:2000 tables, steam tables (where required) and a scientific calculator are available on screen; physical tables and calculators are not allowed.

You must reach the minimum qualifying marks in both papers: 30% for UR, 25% for OBC and EWS, and 20% for all other categories. Paper-I is qualifying; candidates are shortlisted category-wise for Paper-II on Paper-I normalised marks, with separate merit lists for JE (Civil), JE (Electrical & Mechanical), Scientific Assistant and JE (Telecom).

Marks from multiple shifts are normalised using SSC's procedure of 2 June 2025. Mechanical and electrical papers are normalised against each other, as are the three Scientific Assistant papers. Final selection and allocation are made on Paper-II normalised marks and your post preferences.

Tentative answer keys are published after each paper; you can challenge a question online for ₹50 per question.

Tie-break order (equal Paper-II marks)

How to apply for SSC JE 2026

  1. 1

    Complete One-Time Registration

Apply on ssc.gov.in or the mySSC app. A registration on the old ssc.nic.in website does not work on the new site. Aadhaar-based authentication is advised; without it you must upload proof of name, date of birth, address, photograph and gender.

  2. 2

    Capture your photo live

The photograph is taken live by the application module. Sit in good light against a plain background, camera at eye level, without cap, mask or spectacles.

  3. 3

    Upload your signature

Upload a scanned signature in JPEG format of 10–20 KB, about 6.0 cm wide by 2.0 cm high.

  4. 4

    Pick three exam centres

Give three centres in order of preference within the same SSC region. Centre change requests are not considered later.

  6. 6

    Pay the fee

The fee is ₹100, paid online by BHIM UPI, net banking or Visa, MasterCard, Maestro or RuPay debit card by 23 September 2026 (11 pm). Women, SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen are exempt.
