SBI Clerk is State Bank of India's own recruitment of Junior Associates (Customer Support & Sales), the bank's clerical cadre. Unlike IBPS Clerk, SBI runs the whole process itself and recruits only for SBI. The 2026 advertisement is CRPD/CR/2026-27/17, with online registration from 11 to 31 August 2026.

It offers 7,680 regular vacancies across 24 states and UTs, plus backlog vacancies listed separately. You apply for one state only, must know its local language, and can appear only once under this recruitment. Selection has an online preliminary exam, an online main exam and, if needed, a local language test; there is no interview, and the merit list is drawn state-wise and category-wise on main exam marks alone.

This guide sets out the vacancy table, pay, age and relaxation rules, the exam patterns, the language test, the wait list and the application steps exactly as the official SBI advertisement prints them.

SBI Clerk 2026 vacancies: state-wise

The advertisement lists 7,680 regular vacancies: 1,114 SC, 837 ST, 1,716 OBC, 760 EWS and 3,253 General. Within these, the horizontal reservation is 91 VI, 83 HI, 76 LD and 70 d&e (PwBD), 760 ex-servicemen (XS) and 333 disabled ex-servicemen/dependents (DXS). PwBD, XS and DXS posts are included in the category figures, not added to them.

Backlog vacancies are shown separately: 287 for SC/ST/OBC (58 SC, 161 ST, 68 OBC), 355 for PwBD (76 VI, 113 HI, 80 LD, 86 d&e) and 1,444 for ex-servicemen (964 XS, 480 DXS). The SC/ST/OBC backlog is net of the posts advertised in SBI's separate special recruitment drive (CRPD/CR/SPLDRIVE/2026-27/16).

SBI says the vacancies are provisional and may vary with the Bank's actual requirement. You are considered only for the state or UT you apply for and, if selected, are posted in that state. Candidates for Maharashtra (Maharashtra and Mumbai Metro circles) and Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow circle) should check the circle's operational areas on SBI's website before applying.

On top of basic pay you receive dearness allowance and other allowances, which vary with the place of posting, plus provident fund, pension under the New Pension Scheme, medical and leave-fare benefits as per SBI's rules. We do not show a take-home figure because it depends on your posting.

Age limit, relaxation and qualification

You must be 20–28 years old on 1 April 2026, that is, born not earlier than 2 April 1998 and not later than 1 April 2006 (both days inclusive). Age relaxations cannot be combined with each other.

You need graduation in any discipline from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government, as on 31 December 2026. Final-year or final-semester students may apply provisionally; if provisionally selected, they must show proof of passing on or before 31 December 2026. Integrated dual degree holders must also have passed by that date. The date of passing is the one on your marksheet or provisional certificate.

Matriculate ex-servicemen holding the Indian Army Special Certificate of Education (or the Navy or Air Force equivalent) after at least 15 years of service are also eligible, if the certificate is dated on or before 31 December 2026.

Current SBI clerical staff cannot apply, and nor can former SBI clerical employees who resigned while in the clerical cadre.

How the exams work: negative marking, qualifying marks and merit

Phase-I, the preliminary exam, is a one-hour online test of 100 questions and 100 marks: English Language (30), Numerical Ability (35) and Reasoning Ability (35), with 20 minutes for each section. There are no minimum qualifying marks for individual tests or the aggregate. About 10 times the number of vacancies in each category (subject to availability) are shortlisted for the main exam, in descending order of aggregate marks.

Phase-II, the main exam, runs 2 hours 40 minutes with 190 questions and 200 marks: General/Financial Awareness (50 questions, 50 marks, 35 minutes), General English (40 questions, 40 marks, 35 minutes), Quantitative Aptitude (50 questions, 50 marks, 45 minutes) and Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude (50 questions, 60 marks, 45 minutes). You need a minimum percentage on aggregate, decided by the Bank, with 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/XS/DXS candidates; there is no minimum per subject.

In both exams one fourth of the marks of a question is deducted for each wrong answer.

Preliminary marks are not added for selection. The final merit list is drawn state-wise and category-wise on main exam aggregate marks only. Trained SBI apprentices who meet the conditions get 5 bonus marks (2.5% of 200) added to their main exam aggregate.

General English is tested in English. The other tests are offered in English and Hindi, and in the regional language for several states — for example Gujarati in Gujarat, Kannada in Karnataka, Odia in Odisha, Tamil in Tamil Nadu, Telugu and Urdu in Telangana, and Bengali in West Bengal, Tripura and Assam.

Local Language Proficiency Test (Phase-III)

You must be proficient in reading, writing, speaking and understanding the specified local language of the state you apply for, and you choose one language in the online form.

If you produce a Class 10 or Class 12 marksheet or certificate showing you studied that language, you do not take any language test. Otherwise the test is held after provisional selection but before joining, at a centre in the state you applied for, at your own expense. It has a non-verbal and a verbal test with minimum qualifying marks decided by the Bank (5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/XS/DXS). Candidates who fail it are not offered appointment.

Wait list, probation, transfers and the job

  • A wait list of up to 50% of vacancies (state- and category-wise) is kept. Candidates are released from it quarterly against non-joining and resignations from the current batch, and it is valid for one year from the final result.
  • New Junior Associates are on probation for at least 6 months and must complete the e-lessons the Bank prescribes; probation can be extended if these are not completed or performance falls short.
  • There is no inter-circle or inter-state transfer for Junior Associates before completing 5 years of service; after that, transfers are considered only in exceptional cases such as extreme compassionate or spouse grounds.
  • The role is sales-oriented: you will make customer calls, give banking and advisory services and cross-sell products inside and outside the branch, which may involve outdoor travel, flexible hours and shifts.
  • Appointment is subject to medical fitness and Know Your Employee (KYE) checks; you must also disclose any pending criminal cases before joining.
