RRB ALP is the Railway Recruitment Boards' centralised recruitment for Assistant Loco Pilots. CEN 01/2026 notifies 11,127 vacancies across 21 RRBs and the Railway zones under them. The post is in Level-2 of the 7th CPC pay matrix with an initial pay of ₹19,900.
Selection has five stages: a screening CBT-1, a two-part CBT-2, a computer-based aptitude test (CBAT), document verification and a Railway medical examination to standard A-1. Final merit combines CBT-2 Part-A marks and the CBAT score in a 50:50 ratio; CBT-1 marks do not count in the final panel.
This guide explains each stage as CEN 01/2026 prints it: the RRB- and zone-wise vacancy split, the trades and branches that qualify, age relaxation, the CBT and CBAT rules and qualifying marks, the eyesight standard, the fee and refund, the application steps and the documents for verification.
RRB ALP 2026 vacancies: RRB-wise and community-wise
CEN 01/2026 notifies 11,127 ALP vacancies: 4,860 UR, 1,746 SC, 919 ST, 2,598 OBC and 1,004 EWS. Ex-Servicemen have horizontal reservation irrespective of community; their 1,115 posts are counted inside these totals, not added to them. The post is not suitable for Persons with Benchmark Disability, so there are no PwBD vacancies.
You apply to one RRB only, and the vacancies you compete for are those of the zones under that RRB. Secunderabad (1,420), Ranchi (1,300) and Mumbai (1,193) have the most; Muzaffarpur (42) and Thiruvananthapuram (64) the fewest.

CBT-1 and CBT-2: pattern, negative marking and qualifying marks
CBT-1 is a screening test of 75 questions in 60 minutes, one mark each, on Mathematics, Mental Ability and General Science (Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of 10th standard). Its marks are not counted in the final panel. Where the test runs in several shifts, marks are normalised.
From CBT-1 merit, candidates equal to 15 times each RRB's notified vacancies are shortlisted for CBT-2, from among those who chose that RRB.
CBT-2 has 175 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes. Part-A (100 questions, 90 minutes) covers Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and Basic Science and Engineering. Part-B (75 questions, 60 minutes) is a qualifying trade test from the Directorate General of Training (DGT) trade syllabi. ITI and apprentice candidates answer from their own trade; diploma and degree holders choose one trade linked to their engineering branch.
Both CBTs deduct 1/3 mark for each wrong answer. The minimum qualifying marks in CBT-1 and CBT-2 Part-A are 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC-NCL and SC, and 25% for ST; Ex-Servicemen follow their community. Part-B needs 35% for every candidate regardless of community, and only Part-A marks are used for shortlisting.
CBT-1 and CBT-2 are offered in English, Hindi and 13 regional languages; questions appear in your chosen language and in English.
Computer-based aptitude test (CBAT) and final merit
From CBT-2 Part-A marks, candidates equal to 8 times the ALP vacancies of each community or category (UR, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, including ExSM) are called for the CBAT, provided they have qualified in Part-B.
On the CBAT day you must bring the signed Self Screening Medical Declaration Report (Annexures VIII-A and VIII-B) in original; without it you will not be allowed to take the test.
The CBAT is held only in English and Hindi and has no negative marking. You must score a minimum T-score of 42 in each test battery separately, irrespective of community. RRB directs candidates to the RDSO website for information on the CBAT.
The RRB-wise merit list is drawn only from candidates who qualify in the CBAT, giving CBT-2 Part-A marks and the CBAT score a 50:50 weightage. Candidates equal to the number of vacancies are then called for document verification and the medical examination, based on merit and zone preferences. Ties are broken by age (older first) and then alphabetically by first name.
Medical standard A-1
- Physically fit in all respects.
- Distant vision: 6/6, 6/6 without glasses, with fogging test (must not accept +2D).
- Near vision: Sn 0.6, 0.6 without glasses.
- Must pass tests for colour vision, binocular vision, field of vision, night vision and mesopic vision.
- Candidates who have had LASIK or any other surgery for refractive error are not eligible for ALP.
- A candidate who fails the medical standard is not empanelled and no alternative appointment is given; a one-time medical appeal is allowed on payment of charges.

The Mathematics and reasoning topics are the same in CBT-1 and CBT-2 Part-A. The notice does not print a section-wise question split for either test.
